Podcast Episode 108 – The Best American Comics 2016

With so many comic books out there, how do you know which are worth your time? The good folks at The Best American… series have got you covered.

Edited by Roz Chast and Bill Kartalopopoulos, this 378-page book features a variety of comics from many in the industry. From big names to small names, we read stories that are funny, thought-provoking, poignant, and weird. We run the gamut of comics that are realistic, surrealistic, and everything in between.

The first exceprt, Killing and Dying, by Adrian Tomine is heart-wrenching and beautiful. The panel layout is very mechanical, in a way, but it propels the story with a fascinating sense of time. The characters are realistic, and relatable. A few pages in, and the full meaning of the comic’s title hits you like a ton of bricks.

You owe it to yourself to check out this anthology. You’ll surely find something of interest, something to feel.
